Movement Training
Sherborne Developmental Movement
Since graduating in 2002 with a first-class Honours degree in dance with psychology my work has centred around enabling others to experience the positive effects of movement and dance. Whether that is through yoga, somatic experiencing, or creative dance, I have enjoyed sharing my love of movement with others. More recently I have been sharing my knowledge and teaching others to share the joy of movement with those they work with.
One approach I find especially useful as a tool to developing dance and movement awareness and skill, especially relevant to those that support others to reach and maintain their full physical and emotional potential is Sherborne Developmental Movement (SDM). I am an experienced and successful Internationally Qualified Course Leader (IQCL) of SDM, who has additional developmental and somatically informed therapy training and movement practice, coupled with extensive teaching in school and community settings I am well placed to offer your in-school or setting training.
SDM is an approach to movement that makes sense, it connects individuals with their bodies, space, and those around them in logical, progressive, and adaptable ways. Movement experienced in an SDM session reflect developmental movement patterns and stages experienced in utero and in the informative developmental years. These patterns are known on a cellular level and offer an accessible approach to movement education and physical and emotional re-patterning. Further, SDM is based on success and invites and encourages participants to contribute to the movement session in their own unique way, to continue to test ideas and push personal boundaries.
Based on observation, the person-centred SDM approach develops physical literacy, confidence, and self-esteem. In addition, the relational aspects of the approach support physical learning and provide immediate biofeedback and help develop meaningful and appropriate relationships.
SDM TRAINING
The initial SDM training journey explores the basic movement concepts of movement through 4 introductory 3 hour sessions and explores fundamental movement concepts:
‘This is Me’
‘This is Me in Space’
‘This is me in Relation to Another’
‘This is how I move in Space’
Rudolph Laban
After these 4 movement sessions, you are certified as an SDM Beginner.
Two Further 3-hour sessions provide the tools and resources to create and deliver SDM movement sessions, based on the 4 fundamental movement concepts, for other people. Upon completion of these 6 3-hour training sessions, trainees are Certified SDM Practitioners and can lead SDM sessions in their settings. Trainees may then choose to deepen their movement knowledge and attend an Internationally organised course (we will invite trainees from abroad or you could attend a non-UK course).

Upcoming Open courses level 5 and 6 are open to all who have completed sessions 1 - 4 or before July 2022 Level 1.
